Using Christianity to Disguise Hate

It’s time to address the normalized antithesis of Christianity: Hate.

“Anyone who hates another brother or sister is really a murderer at heart. And you know that murderers don’t have eternal life within them.” — 1 John 3:15

Hate /hāt/: (1) feel intense or passionate dislike for (someone). (2) intense hostility and aversion usually deriving from fear, anger, or sense of injury.

Before we get started, let’s explore one of the largest beliefs of what Christianity is. According to the C.S. Lewis Institute, they state that “Following Jesus, then, entails both obeying his teachings and imitating his example”. Following this belief, let’s discuss this topic further.

If, to be a Christian, one of the tasks is to obey His teachings and imitate His example, where does homophobia, sexism, racism and all other forms of hate fit into Christianity? I ask this because, for every form of hate, we can pinpoint a “believer”. Even worse, we can find whole organizations that hate others, but claim to believe in Jesus Christ. However, in the bible, we saw Jesus go out of his way to talk to prostitutes, lepers, essentially every individual who was “othered” by society. Although Jesus wanted a different life for them, they were never met with immediate judgement, but love.
