There is no such thing as a balanced life. Here’s why…
I am currently in the early stages of my career, yet, even while in college I had trouble grasping the idea of “work-life balance”. Particularly as a business student, they push the importance of achieving this.
When we had to create LinkedIn accounts, I was exposed to mini-essays about people struggling to achieve work-life balance. Or how someone just died and were quickly replaced because companies don’t care.
Or someone who decided to take that trip after 15 years of non-stop working and had an awakening about the importance of rest.
I was stunned.
But then I began to wonder. When has life ever been balanced? Sure, there’s the teachings of the yin and yang, but sometimes life is a bit more sour than sweet.
Or vice versa. Or it is all sweet. Or its mostly sweet with a nagging “sour” in our lives.
However, balance? What exactly would that imply?
That we work as much as we play? What would that actually look like? One week of work, one week off, one month of work, one month off… one YEAR of work, or one year off?
I’m not exactly sure balance has ever been real.
The definition of balance is: a state of equilibrium. Complete balance.
